Welcome to Disability Justice Library Podcasts and Videos !

This is a selection of podcasts and videos whose theme revolves around different types of disability issues. As with the rest of the library, these resources are not exhaustive, but are meant to provide thoughtful places to start exploring lived experiences, history, activism, and useful tools.

Podcasts

The Heumann Perspective

The late great Judy Heumann's podcast began during the height of Covid and is such an amazing listen/watch (episodes are also available on YouTube with closed captions). Like Alice Wong's Disability Visibility podcast, Heumann has guests that run the gammut of perspectives and lived experiences. Especially in a time of isolation, but even now in a time when community and outreach are vital, the topics and organizations/movements discussed are absolutely relevant to where we've been and what we can do next.

Krip News

Krip News is described best by Leroy Moore Jr.'s Wikipedia page:"The primary goal of the Krip Hop Nation is to increase awareness in music and media outlets of the talents, history and rights of people with disabilities. The Krip Hop Nation also focuses on advocacy, activism and education and holds workshops on relevant social, artistic, and political issues." If music and advocacy are your passion, give it a listen.

KPFA: Pushing Limits

KPFA:Pushing Limits have grassroots activism and strategy at their heart. Focusing on news and events that impact disabled communities, this is perhaps the most contemporary, real-time podcast for disability justice as it is happening.

YouTube Channels

Jessica Kellgren-Fozard

Jessica's channel has been a favorite for years. She has a wide range of videos, but mostly speaks about disability (she has several which she will tell you about), queer history, and current events both in the world and her own life. The link is to her compilation of 74 (to date) videos about disability, but there is so much to explore and engage with on her channel.

How to ADHD

Another Jessica whose videos about ADHD are both grounded and emotionally honest about her experiences with ADHD and the challenges with stigma, and re-evaluation with how to manage everyday tasks/environments.

Molly Burke

Molly might have one of the highest profiles (she's been on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah), but her channel is all about her advocacy and experiences with being blind. The video at the top of the page via the link is one that has broken containment, where she talks about the importance of braille bathroom maps, but all of her videos have something to offer.

LeDerick Horne

One of the biggest criticisms of the disability rights movement is how centered it is in a white male perspective. LeDerick Horne highlights black voices throughout the movement that people may have forgotten, or not known were part of the fight. He is also a poet, speaker and advocate in his own right.

Honeybunch of Onion Tops

Set up as part Vlog part food sensitivities/receipes for sensory issues, Honeybunch of Onion Tops gives validation and voice to how ADHD and Autism affect appetite and relationships with food, and ways to play around with finding what works for you.

Equip Me OT

This one does what it says on the tin. Videos of various at home tutorials for different equipment needs within varying spaces, as well as best practices for positioning and ease of movement. She also reviews different mobility aids and compares them to illustrate best value and use case as needed.

Videos

Examined Life

Sunaura Taylor and Judith Butler have an honest conversation about perceptions of disability, lived experience, and what it means to exist in spaces/create space for yourself.

Self-determination and self-advocacy for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities

Another example of 'does what it says on the tin', this brief video goes over what self-determination and self-advocacy look like when decisions are made by proxy or with advocates who work closer with people with intellectual disabilities.

Capacity Works: Exploring Possibilities with Social Presencing Theater at Job Path

Capacity Works is a unique presentation by Social Presencing Theatre with individuals of varying disabilities exploring what different barriers they face when trying to find a job.

Judith Heumann’s Fight for Disability Rights (feat. Ali Stroker) - Drunk History

If you have never heard of the 504 sit-ins and their relevance to disability history and the creation of the ADA, or if you have read about it so many times because it is such a foundation of how we got to now, but wished someone would film it and lip-sync to it while not entirely sober, then you are in for a treat. Drunk History was always an interesting show to watch, but this video is pitch-perfect flawless. A great way to find out about the 504 sit-ins as well as admire Ali Stoker for her portrayal of Judy Heumann, this one is well worth a watch.

ASSUME THAT I CAN | World Down Syndrome Day 2024

There is nothing to write about this video that the video doesn't say for itself. An advert for World Down's Syndrome Day but so much more. If you have ever been on the receiving end of doubt of your capabilities, tried to explain to someone that you'd like to be able to try something, or have been made to feel lesser just by existing in a public space, watch this video. It is so much more than an advert. It is a battle cry.
